Ministry of Small Scale Industries, Government of India
Findings
The study basically looked into the status of the small-scale industrial sector in the north eastern states. For the purpose, the performance of the sector along some pre-determined parameters was analysed and the status of all the eight north-eastern states was looked into separately. In addition to this, it also attempted to look into the role played by the support organisations operating in the region for the development of the small-scale industrial sector. The study revealed that the SSI sector is facing some common problems across the eight states though it varied in magnitude. Infrastructure, dearth of finance, weak marketing linkages is some of the problems faced by the SSI units. Project cost escalation, low & declining capacity utilisation, limited utilisation of power operated tools and machineries, untapped potential of the demand of the bulk purchasers and dependency on job order mode of operation are revealed as some of the major features of the SSIs of the region. In addition to this, sickness is one of the major problems that is eroding the overall effect of the growth in the number of registered units in the states of the region. Nevertheless it was found that some categories of SSI units have registered a marginal growth over the past ten years in terms of sales though cases of negative growth were also noticed.
